MASS FOR THE 21st CENTURY celebrates the passing of the 20th Century and coming of the Third Millennium through music, dance, costumes and theater. It is a joyful ritual of passage wherein adults pass on the stewardship of Planet Earth to their children.

At the most environmentally-perilous moment in human history MASS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY is a monumental work intended to reaffirm our commitment to nurturing life on this fragile planet, and it calls on all of us to offer our best to future generations. This visionary performance piece was created by internationally acclaimed conductor and composer CARMAN MOORE as a secular/spiritual work informed by the spirituality of the world's great belief systems to celebrate the coming together of old and new, heaven and earth.

The MASS consists of 20 songs, chorales, ensembles, and instrumental pieces divided into 3 sections---Introduction and Meditation on the 20th Century; A Morality Play; and Realizing The New Millennium.

MASS FOR THE 21st CENTURY was commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and had its world premiere in August 1994 in Damrosch Park. Conducted by the composer at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, the 2 performances were attended by over 10,000 enthusiastic listeners.
