Abstract/Summary/Outline:

This thesis is an ethnomusicological study of garamut (log idiophone) music of Baluan Island, Manus Province, Papua New Guinea, resulting from fieldwork conducted in Baluan and elsewhere. The study takes a musicological focus and represents the pathways and methods that the author has pursued in order to learn to play the garamut repertoire in a manner acceptable to the people of Baluan.
